”Sf. Gheorghe” Church – Southern Cemetery (St. George)

Location: Vîlcele Street, no. 3
Positioned inside the Southern cemetery, there is a genuine aura of legend presiding over the church “Sf. Gheorghe”. According to oral tradition, it is said that there are two inscriptions present in the place of worship, including one located at the entrance engraved in stone - which mention the its foundation built to the wish of Vlad Țepeș, after a battle that he had had with the Turks - near Focșani.
Unfortunately, after some repairs incurred in 1887, the inscriptions were destroyed by workers by negligence.
Wooden building at the basis, the church enjoyed several founders along time, among whom (according to the sayings): Vlad Țepeș, Țepeluș and Vlad Călugărul.
In 1742, according to a marble slab located in the abode, the church was rebuilt in brick by Constantin N. Mavrocordat. In 1852, being in ruin, the church is assisted and rebuilt by landowners of Pastieşti and Robeşti .
Structurally “the church presents a cross-shaped plan with porch, narthex, nave and altar and a spire above the porch. The access to the tower is a spiral staircase located in the exterior decor of the narthex, in a polygonal tower. The interior is covered by cupolas supported on arches and pendentive. The porch, originally opened presents arcades resting on massive pillars made of masonry and surmounted on masonry plinths, interrupted by the access from the west side.” (National Cultural Heritage built in Vrancea County – Museum of Vrancea).
